It’s A Sad Day for Democracy
After agreeing chat and a cuppa with local Councillors, over a brew, in the heart of the community, it now turns out that Labour Councillors have been advised by the Town Hall Legal team not to attend any hustings type activity or engage with any opposition Councillors. Well, that’s one story, the other is that its a regional Labour Party decision.
What a sad day for real democracy – you know, that ancient Government by the people idea, not controlled by the centre!
How do we grow the democratic muscle locally, or interest in representative democracy, when the local approach is to maintain the status quo?
Keep the turn out low to keep the ruling party in control. Real community power in action !!!
This is the kind of approach and type of politics that, for the sake of humanity and the planet, is in dire need of hospicing.
It’s certainly why I became interested in co-founding the Neighbourhood Democracy Movement.
What a shame that we’re likely to have only liberal and tory candidates in a ward thats been labour for ever, with one of the most community minded Labour Cllrs I have ever laid my eyes on. 🤦♀️
A sad day for democracy; a demonstration of fear and control based decision making, and a real lack of trust in peoples ability to make informed decisions.
No wonder we’re growing our own, with trust at the centre.
I hope for a future update where I say – they’ve reconsidered and we’re going to have a proper conversation. 🤞🏻
